Black Cinderella and the New Jim Crow: Media Representation in Post-Racial America

No matter whether it is consumed via broadband or broadcast, billboard or bus shelter, it is nearly impossible to ignore the constant stream of media imagery bombarding us all each day. Messages of hope, of despair, of commerce and compassion; it is easy to take this input at face value, to accept the image as presented as well as the assumptions that come with it. This panel is about challenging those assumptions, in particular as they relate to fiction and popular media. Key topics will include race as a distraction from character default white and the proliferation of race blindness. The focus will be primarily on visible demarcations of Otherness during this discussion (race as a major talking point given our current social climate, but also key examples touching on gender, size, and mobility). This topic touches on a lot of sensitive points for many, many people, so expect open minds, tolerant hearts, and strong moderation.
